OVER THE PAST number of years, we have seen more and more films and television series tackle the thorny issue of abortion.

Obvious Child, Jane The Virgin, Scandal and Girls have all dealt with the issue head-on in recent years, and helped lessen the stigma associated with the procedure.

With calls for a referendum to repeal the Eighth Amendment, it was only a matter of time before an Irish film addressed this issue.

This weekend, Twice Shy, a low-key indie drama about a young Irish couple faced with an unwanted pregnancy hits cinemas around the country.

Directed by Tom Ryan, the film tells the story of Andy (Shane Murray-Corcoran) and Maggie (Iseult Casey), a young couple who fall pregnant and decide to travel to England to get an abortion. The film also stars Ardal O’Hanlon, Pat Shortt, and Paul Ronan.

While the debate around abortion can often descend into histrionics, Twice Shy is a frank, level-headed look at a choice women and couples across Ireland make every day.

No judgment. Just sensitivity.

The film premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh last summer where it picked up rapturous reviews.

It’s released in cinemas around the country tomorrow and will also be available to stream on Volta.

A sweet, important film that couldn’t come at a better time.
